Getting Started with Your BuddyRider®
From first sniff to first ride, here’s how to get your pedal pal comfortable.
Once you've checked your dog and your bike, getting BuddyRider set up is straightforward.
How to get your dog used to their BuddyRider®
Most dogs take to their BuddyRider® quickly and with very little fuss. There can be a little resistance when they’re first placed in the basket and the harness is done up, but this usually settles once you get moving.
Time for your first ride
When you’re ready to introduce your dog, make sure the bike is upright and held securely. This is a two-person job to start with (after a few rides you'll be able to tackle this solo).
Once your dog is safely secured in the harness, get underway. Most struggling quickly stops once you’re moving and they have the wind in their face and ears!
If your dog is particularly anxious or tends to cling to the person who isn’t riding, having that person jog or ride ahead of you can help. Being able to see their favourite person can make the experience much less stressful.
Buddyrider suggests that dogs can be gradually introduced to the bucket on the floor using the harness and treats. In my experience, most dogs settle quickly once underway, but this option is there if needed.
Let your dog find their favourite position
It’s amazing how quickly most dogs relax and start enjoying the ride. Dogs will naturally find the position that feels most comfortable for them. Some will place their paws on the paw deck, while others prefer to sit with their front legs straight.
It’s a rare dog that doesn’t take to their BuddyRider® once they get used to it. We’re always amazed at how quickly they relax and enjoy the ride!
Can I ride my bike with my dog in a BuddyRider®?
Yes, but getting on and off safely is the most important thing to consider.
Riding with your BuddyRider® is generally the easy part. The challenge can be getting underway and coming to a safe, controlled stop.
Practise first
Get confident riding with your BuddyRider® empty before your pedal pal joins you. Practise mounting, getting underway, turning and stopping.
The BuddyRider® can reduce the space available on a step-through bike, and your seat may need to be raised to achieve the correct fit. This can make getting your leg over the seat more difficult.
A safer technique is to start with one foot on the pedal, push off, and swing your leg across onto the seat as the bike begins moving.
Rider height matters
Your height and bike design can make a big difference. Riders under 160cm (5ft 4") may find mounting and dismounting particularly difficult with a BuddyRider® fitted.
We've sold many BuddyRiders® over the years, and difficulty getting on and off the bike has been the main reason for returns.
Please check that you can safely mount, ride and stop your bike with a BuddyRider® before purchasing. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you work through the fit.
