Will BuddyRider® Fit My Bike?

BuddyRider® is suitable for most bike styles, but there are a few fitting requirements to check first. To find out if BuddyRider is likely to fit your bike, measure up using the guide below, and take note of the information on seat posts and step-through bikes too.

You now have the choice of the standard rigid mounting arm of the newer Flex-arm.

BuddyRider® with Rigid Arm

The Rigid Arm positions the BuddyRider® basket close to the steering head and below the handlebars.

Bike requirements

  • There must be a minimum of 48.5cm between the seat post and the steering head. This distance must be measured at RIGHT ANGLES to the seat post.
  • The receiver that the arm fits into is mounted on the seat post and requires at least 45mm of exposed seat post above the frame.
  • The receiver fits seat posts between 2.6cm and 3.3cm in diameter.

Depending on your bike, the receiver may need to be positioned higher up the seat post to achieve the required 48.5cm clearance to the steering head. Some bikes, particularly certain e-bikes, have frame components that also require the arm to be mounted higher.

Keep in mind that raising the receiver will also raise your seat height, which may make getting on and off your bike more difficult.

Need more flexibility with positioning?
Try the Flex-Arm, which gives you more freedom to position your BuddyRider® basket to suit your bike.

BuddyRider® with FlexArm

The Flex-Arm has a pair of adjustable joints that give you greater freedom to position your BuddyRider® basket within the bike frame, or mount it above and forward of the handlebars.

This makes the BuddyRider® a great option for shorter-framed bikes, bikes with higher handlebars, and e-bikes where the battery affects the space between the seat and handlebars.

Your pedal pal will also sit higher, giving you a more comfortable riding position. You can pedal with straighter legs, rather than having the basket force you to ride with your knees pushed out.

The Flex-Arm has become a popular choice for this improved riding position and added flexibility.

And now that you can choose the Flex-Arm when purchasing your BuddyRider®, rather than buying it as an extra, it’s an even more appealing option.

Bike Fit Requirements

The BuddyRider® dog bike seat will fit a bike with the following measurements. Please check carefully before ordering to avoid disappointment:

Seat post diameter

2.5cm–3cm (1"–1¼")

Exposed seat post

At least 4.45cm (1¾") free above the frame

Spacing

At least 48.5cm (19") between your seat post and handlebar stem

Clearance

10.16cm (4") between the handlebar and where BuddyRider sits, so they don't collide

Have a step-through (or ‘ladies’) bike?

You will need to be comfortable dismounting your bike 'gentle-man-style'. Make sure you can touch the ground while seated.

Seat post material & dropper seat posts

Aluminium or steel only — not carbon fibre or titanium. For dropper seats, be sure to attach the receiver to the main post, not the extension.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use BuddyRider on a carbon fibre seat post?

No — carbon fibre and titanium seat posts aren't strong enough to safely hold BuddyRider's clamp. You'll need to fit an aluminium or steel seat post first.

Does BuddyRider fit a step-through bike?

Yes, as long as you can mount and dismount comfortably and touch the ground while seated once it's fitted.

Will BuddyRider work with my e-bike?

Yes — but we would recommend you purchase the Flex-Arm version. Some e-bikes accommodate a rigid arm. If in doubt, choose the Flex-Arm.

Do I need the rigid mount or the Flex-Arm?

If you ride an e-bike, you'll most likely need the Flex-Arm. If you're on a standard bike, either option works (so long as the measurements are correct), otherwise it comes down to preference.

What's the difference between a rigid arm and a Flex-Arm?

The rigid arm is a solid, fixed bar — a straightforward option if you're on a standard road or mountain bike with plenty of room between your seat post and handlebars.

The Flex-Arm adjusts forward, back, up, down and at an angle, which makes it the better choice for e-bikes, step-through or low-framed bikes, high handlebars, or if you're a shorter rider and your knees tend to brush the seat while pedalling.

What if I have a dropper seat?

It is important the receiver is attached to the seat post, not the dropper section.

How much space do I actually need between my seat and handlebars?

At least 48.5cm measured at right angles to the seat post. This gives enough room for BuddyRider and your dog without crowding your handlebars.
